Animal law: Bills to expand crimes on
animals well-intentioned,over-reaching
, in
the 05/05/08  edition gives an appropriate
discussion of the flood of bills introduced
in this session of the Michigan Legislature.

House Bill 5946, introduced by Rep.
Rebekah Warren of Ann Arbor, Rep. Joan
Bauer of Lansing and Rep. Mark Meadows
of East Landing, and others (11
democrats & 1 republican)  applies to
cruelty to
"ANY VERTEBRATE OTHER

Vertebrates are those animal that have a
bony skeleton and can vary in size from a
guppy fish to a whale.  It includes all
mammals, birds, reptiles, and fish. It
amends the Michigan Penal Code by
providing prison terms of up to four to eight
years.  If this one-size-fits-all bill is

LANSING STATE JOURNAL
EDITORIAL OPPOSES
HB 5946

    SENATE BILL 626
Senate Bill 626 purports to ban wagering on dog racing in Michigan. However, there
are no dog racing tracks in Michigan.  Further, "dog racing" in poorly defined in the bill
and could apply to sled dog racing, field or lure coursing for sight hounds, coon
hound events, agility trials and fly ball races for all breeds.  All these events could be
    considered  “dog racing.”

MAPBD has sent a memorandum to the Speaker of the Michigan House of
Representatives  regarding its position on Senate Bill 626.

We urge you to contact your state legislators and call or write a letter to voice your
opposition to this bill. MAPBD's Director of Legislation, Al Stinson, DVM, indicates
that several senators have told him they plan to support this bill, so it is important
for dog experts to immediately voice their opinions on this legislation. Feel free  to
use any of the data presented in the MAPBD SB 626 MEMORANDUM.
